Preparations underway for reopening of City Resorts

As the City resumes operations of public facilities under COVID-19 Alert Level 2 restrictions, implementing safety measures effectively and mitigating the risk of spreading infection remains the top priority in welcoming residents and tourists to secure their bookings for resorts over the festive period.

Historically, the Recreation and Parks Department opens bookings to the public for its 13 resorts on the 1 September annually. During busy peak periods, most resorts are fully booked and popular with locals for offering affordable accommodation by the ocean, well maintained self-catering chalets and a variety of braai areas, camping sites and caravan facilities.

This year, the opening of bookings has unfortunately been delayed to accommodate the return to work amid COVID-19 and the capacitation of service providers to make the necessary adjustments in order to operate the facilities and offer services to the public. The new booking date will be communicated at a later stage.

An assessment of each facility has been undertaken in order to determine the services that can be utilised by visitors, while still maintaining social distancing, wearing of masks, frequent sanitising of hands and surfaces, as well as adhering to the limitations of a maximum of 50 people at recreational activities as described in the national regulations.

It is likely that once the assessments have been completed, most resorts will open with limitations. The City is required to reduce the usual number of visitors significantly and put in place cleaning and disinfection processes, carried out without overexposure of staff and patrons to health risks.

‘When resorts open, we appeal to the public to assist us by understanding that bookings will be secured on a first-come, first-served basis and that certain areas may be restricted. It is also important that holiday makers and day-visitors play their part in strictly observing the health and safety rules, while taking the opportunity to enjoy a much-needed break away from a challenging year,’ said the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.

In the event that COVID-19 restrictions are raised to Level 3 or higher, resorts will likely be closed and refunds provided for paid bookings by each resort booking office.
